1. What is digital printing?
Digital printing transfers artwork from a digital file to the packaging material without first making engraved printing cylinders. For flexible packaging projects, this can reduce prepress setup and make it practical to produce shorter or more varied runs, depending on the equipment and material specification.
Digital printing is often considered when a brand needs several designs, frequent artwork updates, market tests or a relatively short production run. It can also be useful for producing printed samples and moving from approved artwork to production with fewer traditional setup steps.
2. What is gravure printing?
Gravure printing uses engraved cylinders to transfer ink onto the packaging film. Each color generally requires its own cylinder. Once the cylinders are prepared and the press is set up, gravure is well suited to repeat production and larger-volume orders where the setup investment can be spread across more packaging.
Gravure is commonly selected for established products with stable artwork and repeat order demand. It supports multi-color printing and can deliver consistent results when cylinders, inks, substrates and press conditions are properly controlled.
3. Digital printing vs. gravure printing: key differences
| Consideration | Digital Printing | Gravure Printing |
|---|---|---|
| Printing setup | Artwork is prepared digitally; no engraved gravure cylinders are required. | Engraved cylinders are prepared for the job and each required color. |
| Order quantity | Often attractive for shorter runs, multiple SKUs or frequent design changes. | Often more cost-effective for larger, repeat-volume orders after setup. |
| Artwork flexibility | Convenient for changing designs, versions and variable information, subject to machine capability. | Best suited to stable artwork that will be used repeatedly. |
| Color approach | Fuhehu's digital program uses CMYK printing; achievable color range depends on the file, substrate and equipment. | Fuhehu offers gravure printing up to 9 colors, with color and special-ink planning based on the approved specification. |
| Lead time factors | Can reduce cylinder preparation time; material availability, proofing and production scheduling still matter. | Cylinder making and press setup add preparation steps; repeat orders may benefit from retained cylinders. |
| Best-fit scenarios | Market testing, shorter runs, multiple SKUs and more frequent artwork updates. | Large-volume programs, stable designs and recurring production. |
4. Which printing method is more economical?
There is no universal quantity at which one method always becomes cheaper. Digital printing generally has fewer traditional setup costs, while gravure requires cylinder preparation but can offer an attractive unit cost when the order volume is sufficient. The break-even point varies with bag dimensions, number of colors, artwork versions, material structure, order quantity and current production conditions.
For a fair comparison, ask your packaging supplier to quote the same bag specification, material structure, print coverage and order quantity using both methods where practical. Compare the total project cost, not only the price per bag.
5. How should you choose for your packaging project?
- Choose digital printing when you need shorter runs, several artwork versions, faster design changes or a market test.
- Consider gravure printing when your artwork is stable and you expect larger or repeat orders.
- Review both options when you are launching a new product that may grow from a small initial order into regular production.
Also confirm the print method is compatible with the required film structure, pouch format, filling equipment, appearance standard and intended product application. Food-contact suitability depends on the complete packaging construction and the applicable materials, inks, adhesives and manufacturing controls—not simply on whether the print process is digital or gravure.
